4 Down, 16 To Go

What a weekend!

Sorry for my absence, it’s been a busy couple of days here! Jason and I had so much fun this past weekend Smile Saturday was the most fun (of course!) because we spent the day listening to live music from a bunch of different bands. The not-fun part: standing for 10 straight hours! But it was worth it Winking smile

I took so many pictures and have put them in a slideshow for your viewing pleasure Open-mouthed smile The food comes after the slideshow because it’s less fun haha!

Please enjoy…

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? I think, for me, it’s a tie between Three Days Grace, Theory of a Deadman and Seether. Can’t pick just one!

[Am I the only girl out there that listens to this stuff? I’ve never met another girl my age that likes rock and alternative…It’s funny because I used to only listen to pop and rap, but over the last few years it’s gotten to the point where I just can’t stand the stuff. Funny how our preferences change over time Winking smile ]

Since there was a rule against bringing food into the concert (what’s up with that?!), Jason and I decided to have a HUGE late lunch at a new burger joint in Charlotte. I was a little hesitant on going to a burger place for lunch because I wasn’t sure they catered to vegetarian/vegan needs. But they did! So it all worked out Open-mouthed smile

I ended up getting a veggie burger with lettuce, tomato, and bbq sauce on a wheat bun with a side of…

…sweet potato tater tots!!!!! (<—”I can’t believe they serve these! Is this real life?!” is what I thought when I saw them on the menu.

Tastiest. idea. everrrrrrrr. So crispy and delicious.

And even though I’m vegan, I have to admit that Jason’s burger sounded a-mazing.

Two beef patties (fresh, ground upon ordering) stuffed with chili, coleslaw and smothered in melty cheddar cheese. If that isn’t food porn, then I don’t know what is.

Jason quickly labeled it the best burger he’s ever had after just one bite.

Just look at that happiness! I’m glad to be with someone that gets as excited as I do around good food Open-mouthed smile

Our meals kept us full for 7 hours! And beer kept our tummies from rumbling after that Winking smile

Sunday was Mother’s Day and since we spent last weekend celebrating with my mom, we decided to keep it low key and go for a walk in the park with her, my sister and her two kids.

Family time is the greatest. I don’t get to see my niece and nephew that often, so I’m really happy when I do. They are my little love bugs Red heart

My feet/legs were so sore on Sunday, so I decided to wait on that 20-mile run I had planned. You wouldn’t think that 10 hours of standing would seem like a workout, but I swear the next day it felt like I had hiked up a steep mountain or something!

This morning I woke up with the goal of running that 20 miles. And well, I’m not going to drag this out-

That run never happened.

Yep. I’ve hit my first mental block.

Want me to run 16 miles? Sure, you betcha! 18? Heck, why not?! I love running! 20? Errrrrrrrr….really? 20? Can’t today, [insert lame excuse here].

Honestly, I could list all of the excuses that I conjured up in my brain while running 4 of those 20 miles this morning:

  1. I haven’t been getting enough sleep (newborn kitten=energy zapped)
  2. My right heel has been hurting a lot lately
  3. I’ll do it tomorrow
  4. Hmmm, what was that other one?? Oh yeah- It’s too hot out.
  5. There’s too much to do at home.

And it goes on and on, but the truth is: I just didn’t feel like running. And I immediately felt bad for feeling that way.

The beginning of the would-be 20 miles was spent arguing with myself in my mind. “You’re a runner! It’s what you do! How can you not feel like running?”

It’s safe to say that I’ve reached a burn out.

There are two reasons for this:

  1. I started my training way too early (Hello, the race isn’t until November and you’ve already been training for a month)
  2. I’m way to hard on myself and can be very a bit overzealous at times.

Not doing this run doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to one part of me, but the overachiever/perfectionist/competitive side of me is going crazy. When I say that I’m going to do something, no matter what it is, then I do it. And I’ve been singing the “20-miles to run” song for 3 days now…and it just isn’t happening this week.

This is my first time training for something this big and I think I just started too early. The thought of running 3x a week until November makes me lose my mind. Don’t get me wrong- I love running, but I miss having the freedom of choice in my workouts.

Today I found myself not wanting to run, but wanting to head to the gym and do the elliptical and stairs instead. But I tried. I packed snacks, Gatorade, my Ipod and everything I would need for a 20-miler. After two miles, I knew it would never happen. I was running faster than I ever had, but that didn’t matter to me. I was hating the exercise…and to me, there is nothing more important than enjoying what you are doing. I mean, come on! That’s why I run in the first place, because I enjoy it. If I’m not giving it my all, then I should just go home.

At the beginning of training, I promised myself that as soon as I felt like running was becoming a chore that I would take a break and focus on other things for a week. And if I wake up wanting to run, then so be it.

So that’s what I plan to do.

Still, I can’t help feeling a bit like I’ve failed… or embarrassed for making a big deal out of running 20 miles for the first time Embarrassed smile

That first time will come eventually Smile

Right now, I’m just going to focus on doing what feels right. Maybe after a week of free-choice exercise, my training plan will seem appealing again! I’m glad I started this early so that I have time to take off!

Have you ever experienced burn out with an exercise?

It’s time for a kitten update! Cat face

[Are you getting tired of the Sophie pics yet? Hehe]

Sophie doing great. She is developing such a fun personality Open-mouthed smile

She likes to climb my shirt and perch on my shoulder like a parrot. She also chews my hair when she’s up there!

She prefers sleeping on shoes, CD’s or in a dark corner of a room. She also prefers to play with moving feet rather than her toys! She’s been stepped on a couple of times, but she forgave us Smile

Today was her first day on wet food (the stuff smells terrible and I can’t wait until the day when I can switch her to dry!). She had her fill and then Big Kitty snuck his way in to finish off the rest…

These two are like this Fingers crossed

I can’t believe how protective my other cat is over Sophie! It’s so cute.

They melt my heart In love

We did have one health scare last week, but after an impulse vet visit and some medication, we are back on track.

(If you are new to this blog, you can read about Sophie’s story here and here.

Gosh this was a long post! I’ve got to go do a few ‘motherly’ duties (read: feed kitten, wipe her bottom) and then it’s time to relax on the couch with a book!

Hope you guys had a wonderful weekend, happy Monday!

Thanks for reading Open-mouthed smile

The Month of May

Hi there Smile

Thank you for all of the kind comments regarding our new family member! She is a cutie, isn’t she? Winking smile

These past couple of weeks have been so exhausting. It’s hard playing “Momma Cat”! Sophie has made a ton of progress though:

  • The inflammation on her right eye is almost nonexistent! Her eyes are still a little foggy, but so much better than what they were!
  • She can see the outline of objects and is no longer bumping into everything
  • She is eating a lot more kitten milk, but not as many times throughout the day. Last night she slept through the night without waking up, so maybe the midnight feedings are done?? (I hope so!!!!)
  • Her playful side is coming out! We bought her a toy mouse to play with. If we put it right in front of her, she will swat at it…thus begins a 30 minute play session Smile
  • She’s using the litter box! Only to pee, the other we are still working on…

So there you have it.

I’m so glad that she came into our lives, even if it is hard work!

Last week I was feeling a bit out of sorts – I guess it was the lack of sleep and everything, but I decided to take a week off of running. I ended up doing two short runs though and a lot of strength training at the gym. This week I’m feeling a bit more rested, so I’m just going to pick up where I left off with my running! Meaning- I have a 20 mile run this weekend! Bahhhh!

Maybe it won’t be too bad Winking smile I think the hardest part is finding a route that I can actually run 20 miles on without having to drive to two separate places!

Moving on-

The month of May is here!!!!!!!!!

I could not be happier! April was so…..slow. There are so many fun things going on this month! Last month Jason was so busy with homework and projects that we hardly spent any time together, but now he only has an exam left before getting a summer break! We plan on taking full advantage of that time!

  • This weekend we are attending a “Carolina Rebellion” concert-fest! It’s an all day concert with a ton of awesome bands Smile Should be fun!

  • Next Friday I am walking in my cap and gown. I wasn’t planning on walking because I’ve already attained my degree, but my family really wants to see me walk, so I will.
  • The day after I “graduate”, Jason, Trixie and I are headed to the Outer Banks for a week-long vacation! Open-mouthed smile Open-mouthed smile That’s what I’m most excited for! Laying on the beach and doing nothing at all Island with a palm tree
  • The week when we come back is when I start school…and yes I am very happy about that because I am a huge nerd and love being in school Nerd smile

Don’t you love it when you have fun things to look forward too??

This past weekend I…

…shared a date night at our favorite pizza place:

…drank a ton of smoothies (my favorite go-to snack or breakfast right now!)

[Recipe: 1 banana, 1/2 cup soy milk, 8 fresh strawberries, handful of ice, splash of vanilla extract, and a spoonful of peanut butter! Blend in a blender and then enjoy Smile Yum!]

…finished The Hunger Games series and started a new book

The last book of the series (Mockingjay) was just okay. It definitely wasn’t as great as the first two were but it wrapped all of the loose ends up quite nicely and I left feeling satisfied with how it ended!

…had a cookout with Jason’s friends and ate grilled BBQ tofu for the first time!

Loved it! It took only 5 minutes to cook and was really flavorful Smile The coconut rice on the side was also a newbie and I loved that too. It was really easy to make and I’m thinking it would go great with a Cuban or Indian dish…Hmmmm, future recipe in-the-making??? Winking smile

Lastly, look what I received in the mail yesterday!

Open-mouthed smile Looking at this makes me want to do my best in the Exercise Science program that I start in the Fall! Have I mentioned how much I love school? Learning is my thang, haha Smile

Okay guys, I know it was kind of a random post but thanks for reading. I plan on coming back to tell you guys how my first 20 mile run goes! And the concert too Winking smile And maybe I’ll have a new recipe for ya?

We’ll see! Happy Wednesday to you all and have a great week!
